During the summer months, i like to remind that kids that not only are they partaking in a Dance class, but creative movement is also a HUGE part of my curriculum. I like to also remind them that creative movement can be explored in so many different and fun ways, not just dance. So each summer i dive into a world very different from any other that our students have experienced. Last summer they learned  about sumo wrestling and at the end of the sessions were able to partake in their own sumo battles, equipped with sumo suit and all. This summer, the students learned about the Maryland State Sport, Jousting!

Over the course of the summer sessions, the students learned the rules, history and fun facts about the sport of jousting. They took a pre-test at the beginning of the session to see what they may have already known and from their the class to flight. They learned about Knights, kings, chivalry, and the medieval way of life.

During the last week of camp, the students mounted their hobby horses, armed themselves with their lances (pool noodles) and charged into the world of jousting full force. This proved to be a very different and fun activity for the students and judging from the looks on their faces, they really enjoyed themselves.

On August 4, 2016, the BUGS students went on an adventure like no other. An experience that they will never forget! What is that experience you ask,? none other than The Turkey Hill Experience. The Turkey Hill Farm located in Columbia, PA is a brilliant mixture of interactive exhibits, informational tours, a hands on ice cream mixing/tasting and not to mention all the free samples of teas and ice creams your heart desires.

The students were able to walk through the Turkey Hill Museum and learn different facts about ice cream and how its made, learn how to milk a cow and play tons of fun dairy/ice cream related games. At the end of the tour, the students were invited into the lab to create their own ice cream flavors. They were able to mix in different flavorings, and extra goodies such as gummie bears, pretzels, pineapples, pecans and much more.

The Turkey Hill Experience is sure to be something the students will remember for a life time. Every time they crack open a fresh container of Turkey Hill Ice cream or enjoy a nice cold glass of Turkey Hill tea, they will remember their days in the BEST AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM in Maryland..........B.U.G.S!!

Chickens Return to BUGS!!

Summer at BUGS is a relaxed and happy time. The perfect time to get our new chickens accustomed to life with BUGS students.
Students take an active role in caring for these chickens and soon their eggs with be used in Cooking class.

Nalani has a great touch for taming the chickens and is helping them get used to being handled.
Kener(left) and Gabriel feed the chicken some apple while Nalani looks on.

Chickens investigate anything new in their enclosure to see if it's edible. They love apples.
Pedro is practicing the proper way to hold a chicken.
